The Guys in the Clouds Are Judging Your Renovation

A New P
anel From The Court Of Heavenly Style
fresco cycle suggests God’s latest contractors wear baseball caps and look deeply disappointed in you. So apparently heaven has a break room now, and it’s full of dudes in 1940s workwear having a very serious meeting about something you did. The latest “discovered” fresco from the Court of Heavenly Style, titled The Council at the Edge of Dawn if you want to get technical about it, puts four men on a pile of clouds above a suspiciously generic skyline, they are not saints, they are not angels, they are not even smiling, they are your foreman, your architect, your union rep, and that one guy who always stands around the job site with his hands in his pockets, now immortalized in wet plaster for eternity, the one in the newsboy cap has his chin on his fist, which is the universal gesture for “we’ve reviewed the plans and we have concerns, the one in the fedora looks like he’s about to tell you the foundation is load bearing and you absolutely cannot take that wall out, the kid in the blue cap is staring at his lap like he just realized the quote doesn’t include materials, the fourth man, wrapped in something vaguely toga like, has turned his back on the whole city, he’s seen what you did to that brownstone, he’s processing. In the corner are the relics of their trade, a rolled up blueprint, a level, a pair of sunglasses because even when you’ve been elevated to the celestial plane, the sun still gets in your eyes, the blueprint is the important part, it implies that paradise isn’t built on faith, its built on permits, measurements, and someone triple checking the math before the clouds get poured. The whole thing is painted buon fresco, which means the pigment is chemically fused to the wall, it’s permanent, like a bad tiling job you’ll be looking at for the next thirty years, the artist gave the sky that crackled, aged look, but the men are sharp and present, the message is clear, the Renaissance is over, and the new holy figures are the people who know how to read a schematic. This is the big thesis of the Court of Heavenly Style, stop looking up for seraphim, the real divine council is on its coffee break, sitting on the firmament, wondering why you didn’t call them before you started knocking things down, the cracks in the plaster aren’t from age, they’re stress fractures from watching us try to DIY.
