There Is
A Charming Notion In Contemporary
Retail
That a garment should be complete at the moment of purchase, it arrives pressed, finished, resolved, asking nothing of its owner except admiration. One might call this generosity, one might also call it a missed opportunity to let a person actually participate, consider the alternative, a piece cut in raw, unbleached cotton, devoid of any applied color, its only intended dye is the life that follows, a ring from an enamel mug, a stroke of graphite from a pencil kept in the breast pocket, the slow bleaching of a left shoulder by afternoon light, the designer provides the canvas and then, with remarkable restraint, steps aside, after six months, the shirt is no longer a product, it has become a document, the wearer, who perhaps never thought of himself as particularly artistic, has been painting all along without the inconvenience of calling himself an artist.
